Heritage Week is underway
OVER 40 EVENTS TAKING PLACE AROUND THE COUNTY, MANY OF WHICH ARE FREE
A number of events are underway in Sligo as part of National Heritage Week which runs to Sunday, August 26 2018.
The Heritage Office, Sligo County Council has compiled the County Sligo Heritage Week Event Guide which outlines over 40 Heritage Week events taking place across the county and most are free.
Heritage Week is a nationwide celebration of our natural, built and cultural heritage and its is to ‘share stories’ and ‘make connections’ in order to build awareness and enjoyment of our heritage thereby encouraging its conservation and preservation.
Each year in August, many national and hundreds of local community organisations participate by organising events throughout the country.
“Our heritage is what makes County Sligo such a special place. Heritage is central to our sense of place and identity,” said Heritage Officer with Sligo County Council, Siobhán Ryan.
“It is a significant tourism resource attracting visitors to our beautiful county and plays a key role in sustaining communities and supporting the local economy. Investment in our cultural, built and natural heritage engages people with place, supports local economies and animates our tourism industry,” she said.
She added: “We encourage everyone to support the efforts of the many individuals and groups who have organised events for National Heritage Week in County Sligo and to encourage other people to engage with, and advocate for, the heritage within our communities.
“The success of Heritage Week is dependent in all the event organisers across the county, who are enthusiastic, committed and often volunteer their time in order to make National Heritage Week the great success it is.
“Without their interest, hard work and voluntary commitment this week would not be possible.
