Despite closure it’s a positive outlook says McLoughlin

-

A Government TD has said that despite the Stiefel closure the overall trend in job creation was positive in Sligo.

Deputy Tony McLoughlin (FG) said that while the news was deeply regrettable, the overall trend in terms of job creation “was extremely positive.”

He said the Government was committed, under the Regional Action Plan for Jobs, to continue providing quality jobs to further support the most recent jobs announcements in Sligo in 2018 by Phibro (150), Abbvie (100), Abtran (350), E3 Retail (40) and Livetiles (50).

“As difficult as it may be to appreciate right now, I have reason to be confident that we will find new investment for Sligo and new opportunities for the employees of GSK in Sligo,” he said.

He added that he had spoken to the Department for Business Enterprise and Innovation who advise that the immediate concern was for the workers and families directly impacted by this development.

Deputy McLoughlin said he understood many of the employees would remain in their jobs up to 2021.

Deputy McLoughlin vowed that the Government would make every State support available to the workers at GSK.

The Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection is aware of the situation and we will be doing our utmost to help these workers transition and find new employment opportunities when the time comes.
