Surf Lifesavers show off skills
SURF Lifesaving is a sport in Sligo that is getting more and more popular every year.
This is a sport that comprises key aspects of life saving skills and competitive sport.
Originating in Australia in 1907, Surf Lifesaving is a response to drownings at local beaches in Sydney. The sport has been embraced by Irish Water Safety and is growing throughout Ireland.
Sligo Surf Lifesaving Club is a volunteer club working in tandem with Sligo Water Safety Area Committee.
There are a variety of team and individual events that are land and water based flag and beach sprints, swim and board races.
The club continues to grow in number. The committee say they are delighted to have a committed sponsor in Call of the Wild who have generously donated training hats as well as a free wetsuit for a participant in each training group who shows a strong work ethic, determination, commitment, effort and positive attitude towards the club, the sport and their teammates.
This very generous sponsorship has aided the Sligo Surf Lifesaving Club in promoting this ethos along with water safety awareness skills and competitive sport. A powerful combination for anyone.
Sligo Surf Lifesaving Regional finals took place in Rossnowlagh recently and the Nippers (8-14yrs) and Junior (14-16yrs) groups took to the beach with confidence and enthusiasm.
The promised strong winds and rain kindly stayed away leaving Rossknowlagh beach bathed in morning sunshine, with a light wind and gentle swell ideal for a weekend’s racing.
Nipper competitions took place on Saturday followed by the Juniors on Sunday. Sligo showed strength and determination using skills they have obtained during their training each Sunday morning at 9am from June to August.
As the results show Sligo put in a strong performance and achieved plenty of silverware.
A large number of participants qualified for the national competition in Kilkee, Co. Clare.
