5K ROAD RACE AND WALK

The annual Coolaney road race and walk organised by Coolaney-Mullinabre­ena GAA will take place on Friday, August 31, at 7.30 p.m. This year it reverts to a 5km route which is sure to be very appealing to runners and walkers alike. It’s known as the ‘Fastest 5k in the west’. This event has grown hugely in recent years and is now very popular on the circuit. BENEFIT NIGHT

A benefit night for Sr Cait Wims (Peru), in the form of a House Concert, is taking place on Friday, August 24, at Moy River Folk Club in Cloonacool (Moy River B&B). The Demolition String Band from the US will provide the entertainm­ent on the night (Bluegrass and country) with support by local singer, Lana Moore. Spaces at the venue are limited. Those interested in donating to the fund can still do so even if they do not attend the concert. Booking is essential; 087 2512030.

GAA CLUB DRAW

Coolaney-Mullinabre­ena GAA Club have launched their annual Prize Draw for 2018. There are lots of great prizes this year totalling over €2,000 in value, ranging from a top cash prize to great hotel breaks. Tickets are available from senior players, coaches and committee members. All support is appreciate­d. Draw takes place on Sunday, September 9, Green- way Update.

Following the recent publicatio­n by Government of a new Greenway Strategy, it seems more likely than ever that Sligo will have a Greenway in the future. Greenways provide safe, offroad cycle and walking routes, providing a much-needed local amenity and a great tourist attraction. Sligo Greenway Co-Op are the local community working with Sligo Co Co to help create the Greenway on the disused line; Sligo to Bellaghy. You can help by signing up for the Co-op membership at these local outlets: Collooney (Centra), Coolaney (O’ Gradys and Mountain Inn), Tubbercurr­y (Computerbi­ts, Laundry Basket and Coffee Dock), Curry (Yeats County Inn), and Charlestow­n (Market Café). COOLANEY UNITED

Coolaney United Wednesday Night Bonus Ball Draw is to support fundraisin­g efforts for the proposed new Astro Pitch in Coolaney Community park. Each Bonus Ball is €5 with a weekly prize of €100. Bonus balls can be purchased in PK MEATS on Thursday and Fridays and in O’GRADs shop and Pub the rest of the week. Best of luck to all.

JUNIOR YOUTH GROUP

Meetings are every Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Coolaney Community Centre for Youths between the ages of 12-15.

Foróige Club the Foróige Club continues each Friday evening at Coolaney Community Centre between 7.30 p.m. and 9 p.m. It is open to all youths aged 13 to 18 years. We are also currently seeking volunteer leaders. For more informatio­n contact Mark at 086 0740841 or Brendan 087 3964541.

PRIDE OF PLACE

Coolaney has been nominated by Sligo County Council to represent Sligo in the Pride of Place competitio­n. A meeting will be held in Coolaney Community Centre on Wednesday, August 22, and 29 at 8.30 p.m. to discuss how best to present Coolaney to the judging panel. All groups, clubs and interested individual­s are welcome to attend. This is a fantastic opportunit­y to showcase our wonderful community on a national scale.

CLOONLOO SOCIAL

The organisers of the annual Cloonloo social – Cloonloo Developmen­t 2000 – thank all who supported and the local businesses who sponsored prizes for the raffle. Proceeds will go to Cloonloo Hall repairs. They also thank all who donated €887 to the gate collection at the annual Cemetery Mass last Sunday for the upkeep of Templerona­n Cemetery throughout the year.

BINGO

Bingo is held every Friday night in Gurteen Hall at 8.30 p.m. The jackpot is now €3,400 on 49 calls – lotto raffle of €500 – all proceeds are shared between Eastern Harps GAA Club and the hall committee for the upkeep of the hall.

COLEMAN MUSIC FESTIVAL

The Coleman Traditiona­l music festival in Gurteen will take place this year from August 22 to August 26 inclusive. On this Wednesday night ‘The Michael Coleman Story’ – final performanc­e for this year – a great story with singing and dancing – Thursday night a Junior Music session – all young musicians, singers and dancers with Fiona Doherty well known fiddle player hosting the session and all are welcome.

The official opening night Friday the 24th by Cllr Margaret Gormely with the Sligo Lasses: Colette and Laura Gaffney, Niamh O’Grady Siobhán O’Donnell and Maureen O’Dowd, Laura Ganley sean nós dancer also local under-12 dancer Megan Walsh and the talented Tiernan Family from Castlebar.

Then Saturday night Ceoltoiri Coleman plus special guests Deirdre and Sylvie Golden will provide the entertainm­ent. A monster session at the Coleman Cottage at Mount Irwin from three – five on Sunday with guest fiddle player Jason McGuinness – brings the festival entertainm­ent to a close. Festival is organised by the Craobh Coleman Branch CCE.

GURTEEN GAMES COMPANY

Gurteen Games Company members are distributi­ng appeal letters and donation envelopes house to house during August for the upkeep of the playground – the insurance and lighting of walkways. Further work is to be done around the playground.

WALK FOR HOSPICE

Culfadda’s 25th annual Fun Walk in aid of North West Hospice takes place on Sunday, September 9. Registrati­on 12.30 p.m. in Culfadda Hall. Walk commences at 1 p.m.

The fight to save Gurteen post office is up and running and will be intensifie­d week by week. Committees has been formed and there is no doubt that the people have no intention of letting this most very important facility in the village go.
