A workplace accident in which a 37-year-old man from Rossinver died in December 2016 is currently the subject of a Health and Safety Authority investigation.

Patrick McCaffrey died after being smothered by soil following a landslide at the site of a windfarm development, an inquest into his death heard.

Patrick McCaffrey was working on a quarry in Ballyfarnon when a freak landslide hit the site.

He was reported missing, and his body was recovered hours later at 1.50am.

Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue were involved in the operation along with the fire service and the Gardai, neighbours and locals.

The deceased was pronounced dead at the scene.

The inquest was told that Mr. McCaffrey died due to asphyxia.

Coroner Eamon McGowan told the inquest: “Patrick McCaffrey died at The Glen, Ballyfarnon, following an accident at work.

“Death was due to asphyxia due to being buried under earth soils.”

He added: “To Patrick’s immediate family and wife, this is a terrible time. Please accept my sympathy.

“All I can do is try and make things as easy as possible for you. If there is anything you need from me please do get in touch,” he added.

Members of the jury, Dr. Clive Kilgallen and Sergeant Philip Maree extended their sympathies to the family.

The accident is currently the subject of an investigation by the Health and Safety Authority.

A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions and the inquest was adjourned as the matter “has to await criminal charges,” the court heard.
