The Sligo Champion

Young Coolera/ Strandhill side are hoping to cause an upset

-

JOHN McPartland is one of the most renowned and recognised figures in the Coolera/Strandhill area of County Sligo.

One of the most decorated players from that particular part of the county, he can’t hide his jealousy as he watches his players prepare for their upcoming Belfry Senior Championship quarter final clash with St Mary’s.

”I just wish I could play”, he says. McPartland oversaw a fine Group 2 campaign from the seaside men who overcame both St Molaise Gaels and Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point to take top spot.

A two point win over Molaise on August 4th got the all rolling for McPartland’s men before a dominative victory over Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point eight days later guaranteed them top spot in the group.

But McPartland certainly isn’t placing any undue pressure on his team as they go in search of a first Owen B Hunt Cup since their one point defeat of Curry in 2005.

A blend of youth and experience has done the trick for John so far, but he knows his team’s chances depend on them performing on the day against their neighbours St Mary’s.

“The reality is we are in transition”, he notes.

“We blooded a number of young lads who are settling in well.

“We hope that they will learn from the older guys.

“The mix of youth and experience has served us well going through the group.

“However we are aware that the real championship starts now.

“This is where things get really tough.’’ When pressed on the prospect of facing near neighbours Mary’s, McPartland knows thee size of the challenge which faces his players.

‘’They’re a quality side and we have huge respect for them”, he says.

“Betting people are tipping them as the team to topple championship favourites Tourlestrane.

“However, we will prepare well and relish the chance to cause an upset. It will be a great occasion for the supporters. I hear stories about the good humoured banter on the terraces and hope that we will give the red and white something to cheer about.”
