St Mary’s know they need to improve to progress past Coolera/Strandhill challenge

AIMING for their twelfth Sligo Senior Football Championship, St Mary’s manager David Caffrey knows his team’s performances will have to improve if they’re to claim championship number thirteen later this year.

The Sligo town side stumbled through Group one of the Belfry Senior Football Championship, beating Coolaney/Mullinabreena on day one before falling to a disappointing defeat to Tubbercurry in Collooney on day two.

A narrow two point win over Eastern Harps was just enough for the 2016 runners up to match Coolaney and Tubber’s point difference and squeeze through to a meeting with Coolera/Strandhill this Sunday.

Speaking ahead of the game, Caffrey says his panel were relieved to get through but focus now turns to overcoming Coolera.

“Obviously we were delighted to progress from what was a highly competitive group, which was borne out by the fact that three teams finished on four points.

“Our performances fluctuated over the three games but our aim was to move onto the next phase and thankfully that was achieved.”

The Mary’s boss is expecting a tight match against Coolera, who he says have a panel of players capable of competing with the best teams the county has to offer.

“Coolera/Strandhill will be an extremely tough challenge given the quality of player at their disposal, however we also feel we have a strong high quality side and so it should make for an exciting and close contest, which fingers crossed we will come out with a positive result from.”
