CALRY/ST JOSEPH’S

THIS weeks lotto jackpot of €7000 was not won with no match three winners either. The numbers drawn were 6,10,11 and 14. The Village Inn won the promoters prize of €20. Could anyone with any sold or unsold ticket books for the pitch development draw please return them as a matter of urgency ASAP for the draw on Friday night next. On the playing field our Junior team played their final game of the Lola Montez Junior Championship on Friday evening last in Easkey. Trailing by three points at the break, things weren’t looking good for the Calry side but with the introduction of Brian óg “The Bomber” McGauran at half time, the deficit was turned into a one point advantage with him scoring 1-01 without reply in the first five minutes of the second-half. The Easkey bench were quick to react however and changed their midfield to stem the flow of supply to the Calry forward line. This tactic seemed to work effectively and the home side won out relatively comfortably in the finish, to end our interest in the Championship. The excellent work being done by our underage hurling coaches was evident again on Saturday when we sent a very young team out to Coolera to take part in a blitz. The young mixed team performed with amazing skill to come away with a 100% record undefeated , winning their three games comfortably. Our underage football Academy came to an end on Saturday morning after a long season. Special thanks to Eamonn Norton who presented A calmly struck free in the 9th minute of injury time from the game’s outstanding performer James Brennan saw Gaels gain a deserved draw at Scarden on Saturday night and in so doing top their Group and qualify for the knockout stages of the Junior A Championship. Cloonacool were the dominant side in the first fifteen minutes of the game and lead by 1-04 to 0-04 but with Martin Feeney very prominent Gaels managed to get back on level terms by the interval. Gaels took a two point lead early in the second period but Cloonacool, who needed to win by four points to retain an interest in this year’s competition kicked a number of points in succession and a scrappy goal saw them open up a five point lead 2-09 to 0-10. It looked as if the game was done and dusted but with the experienced players such as Damien Kelly, Daragh Currid and Ownie Coyle to the fore Gaels rallied superbly and a goal from Joe Spellman after Coyle had burst through the Cloonacool defence cut the gap to just two. Gaels continued to press and Good work from Aaron Currid won a free which Martin Feeney converted. With time running out another Gaels attack saw Spellman fouled as he raced through and it was left to James Brennan to tie up the scores. A great team effort by Gaels with all 20 Players used on the evening making a huge contribution. The Development Squad has become a real focus within the Club over the last two seasons with a concerted effort to bring through Players just out of underage football working with the experienced Members of the squad. The efforts to date have seen a Junior B title win in 2017 and a Division IV League title come to the Club this season. Now the squad are into the knockout stages in this year’s A Championship. Well done to the Players, Manager Mick MCElligott and his Selectors Peter Wilson, Brian White and Tommy McGowan. Our U14 Boys were beaten in the B championship by Calry/St Joseph’s on Saturday evening and now face St Farnans/Easkey this Tuesday evening at 7.00pm in St Farnan’s Community Park in a play off. Our U16 Girls were beaten at home by Owenmore Gaels on Thursday evening last but still have clinched a semi final slot in the competition. our Junior Ladies were beaten at home by St Farnan’s in the C Championship on Sunday morning. The next Club Lotto Draw will take place on Tuesday September 11th at 8.30pm. Thanks to everyone for their continued support for this important Club fundraiser. Our Club “Cash for Clobber” fundraiser continues to operate. If anyone has unwanted clothes, shoes the Club would be delighted to take them. Items can be left at the Club Buildings on Saturday mornings while coaching is ongoing.

COOLERA/STRANDHILL

IT was a difficult week for the under 14 girls. They made the long journey to Castleconnor on Monday evening to face Eoghan Rua in the second round of the championship.

A difficult first half for our girls saw the bigger more physical home side build up a substantial lead, and at the break they led 4-03 to 1-01, both the Coolera scores coming from Cliodhna O’ Sullivan. The second half brought a much-improved performance from this young team, many of whom are under 12. Nessa O’ Sullivan joined her sister Cliodhna at midfield and together they began to drive the team forward. Aoife Gormley moved to full back and with support from Lisa Kilfeather, Anna McDaniel, Mary Kate McPartland and Ellen Walsh the home attack’s scores were kept to a minimum. Amy Hampson was superb at centre back, and made numerous runs at the Eoghan Rua defence. Cliodhna O’ Sullivan continued to dominate at midfield and would finish with 3-02 to her name, while Luna Simeoni marked her return to the team with a goal. Despite a strong second half the girls came away defeated 6-04 to 4-02. On Friday evening they travelled to Grange and once again came up against a much bigger stronger opposition. Goals from Cliodhna O’ Sullivan and Anna Callaghan and an Amy Hampson point were to be their only scores on the night. Their cause wasn’t helped by an injury to Cliodhna O’ Sullivan just before half time. To their credit the girls battled to the end and once again there were excellent performances from Ava Griffin in goals, Lisa Kilfeather, Nessa O’ Sullivan and Amy Hampson in defence, while up front Ellen Walsh once again worked tirelessly with support from Anna Callaghan and Rachel McManus, UNDER 12 Hurling Final COOLERA/STRANDHILL 5 v 4 Castleconnor

THE U12 boys hurling team played their u12 A County Final replay against Castleconnor on Tuesday last in Sligo Centre of Excellence. Once again, the conditions were going to have a big influence with heavy rainfall before the match, drizzle and wind during the first half dictating patterns of play. As in the first match Coolera started the quicker against the wind and had several chances from the hard-working Hubert Healy, Oisín Whelan, Conor Finan and Tommy Kinane.

Try as they might though, the sliotar just wouldn’t run for them. The wet conditions meant that defences were on top in the first half with the diligent Luke Gilgan, Mark Keane, Cormac Mullins and Jack McDaniel clearing their lines without taking risks. Castleconnor did score from a free to leave the score 1-0 at half time. The scoreline didn’t reflect the efforts both teams put in to make this an enjoyable encounter. COOLERA/STRANDHILL continued to rotate their bench with Aidan O’Loughlin, Fionn Beirne, Finn McDaniel, Eoghan Healy, Cillian Corkery, Sean Kinane and Shane Galvin trying hard to break down the hard working Castleconnor defence.

All the while Aidan Moran was having a battle royal with Ailish Quinn in midfield both players were giving their all to the cause in contributing to both their team’s attacks.

Castleconnor were first to score in the 2nd half with a point from another free. Stefan McMahon, Ultan Bree, James Lynch, Finn McDaniel and Patrick Healy were rotated into the defence and came up trumps against the Castleconnor doing the simple things right while defending their lines. THEY were guided by goalkeeper and captain Cathal Hughes who led by example marshalling his defence to hold Castleconnor scoreless for the rest of the 1/4. Then as the rain stopped Coolera/ Strandhill rallied with two mighty frees from Jack McDaniel in the last couple of minutes of the third quarter. These two points levelled the scoreboard at 2-2 going into the tense last quarter. A few tactical switches saw Conor Finan going into the defence for the injured Oisín Whelan, allowing Luke Gilgan to go forward and Mark Keane went into midfield allowing Shane O’Loughlin into the half forward line. Coolera/Strandhill pressed forward and were unlucky to see an Aidan Moran side-line cut drift wide of the post.

AT this point Jack McDaniel started to dominate the middle of the park and one of his passes found the free running Shane O’Loughlin who beat his marker before tapping over a lovely point to give Coolera/Strandhill the lead with 6 minutes to go. But this Castleconnor team weren’t going to take this lying down and found an equalising score to level the match at 3-3. Coolera/Strand hill again pressed forward with Keane, O’Loughlin and Healy combining to play in Luke Giligan who buried a score in the Castleconnor net. THE roar of the crowd lifted the Coolera/Strandhill team and just as it seemed they were looking the stronger team, Castleconnor summoned their efforts to get a free which hit the back of the net to leave the score 4-4. The drama wasn’t finished there as between them Patrick Healy and Aidan Moran broke up a Castleconnor attack with the sliotar breaking to Tommy Kinane who played in Shane O’Loughlin for a mazy run at the Castleconnor defence before slotting over the winning point 5-4. Castleconnor tried to conjure up another score but both Jack McDaniel and Conor Finan put up the barricades as Coolera/ Strandhill emerged winners on a 5-4 scoreline. Daragh Cox, the new Sligo Hurling Development Officer, presented Cathal Hughes with the Cup on the night.

LIKE the previous drawn final this match was an absorbing match that had both sets of supporters on the edge of their seats.

All 39 players gave their all for the cause showing great determination and skills despite the wet conditions. It was unfortunate that there was a loser on the night but Castleconnor did put it up to Coolera/Strandhill over the two matches making them fight all the way for their County title. FOR the Coolera/Strandhill boys the win has capped an unbelievable season.

Having won the ‘C’ County title last year, they have made huge strides this year in their hurling development. In tight matches they always showed great resilience in coming from behind to win matches that other teams may have lost. The boys can be proud of going unbeaten winning their 9 league matches, drawing the original final before reaching the Holy Grail on Tuesday last. Many thanks to our Underage Jersey Sponsor Total Package Solutions Ltd, the Byrne family and staff in Mammy Johnson’s Ice Cream Parlour who filled the cup with ice cream as celebrations went on into the night.

Thanks to all the boys’ parents for their support throughout the year in bringing the boys to training, matches and our fundraising efforts during the season. HURLING Blitz RANSBORO Pk played host to an under 10 hurling blitz on Saturday. Although the number of teams suffered due to a couple of late withdrawals three clubs were represented.

Many thanks to Cluainín Iomáint and Calry/St. Joseph’s who participated. There was plenty of endeavour and skill to be seen and all the boys and girls did themselves proud.
