The Sligo Champion

Great day out at Little Luna 5k

-

THE Little Luna 5K took place on Sunday last and was certainly an unqualified success.

The 550 taking part (242 walkers, 308 runners) started at the top of Cleveragh Road and finished in the recreation park via the back avenue, so it was predominantly downhill and flat with the occasional slight hill to raise the heart rate.

Letterkenny AC’s Ciaran Doherty, a gold medallist at the European Masters Athletics Championships last year, gave a super display of front running to win in 15:10.

Keeping it in the family, his wife Teresa was 2nd in 16:52 despite taking a short wrong turn roughly 500 metres from the end! Ross Hunter ran well and finished 3rd in 16:58 while Sligo AC’s Kevin McGlone was 4th in 17:23 with North Sligo’s Donal Egan 5th in 17:40.

Delighted race organisers Michael and Fionnuala O’Connell commented afterwards:“Great day. We really want to thank all those who showed up and made this an outstanding success. We’re really delighted to raise the funds raised today for the Sligo General Neonatal, Little People Ireland and Hugh’s House.”
