Disappointment on Enniscrone delay
THE decision to postpone a vote on changing the official name of Enniscrone has been greeted with disappointment. Last June the County Council agreed to hold a plebiscite to change the town’s name from Inishcrone to Enniscrone in English and Inis Crabhann to Inis Eiscir Abhann in Irish. The Council has received legal advice that the plebiscite should be deferred pending new legislation which would streamline the process for changing placenames. Enniscrone Placename Committee say they are disappointed given a tentative date for a plebiscite had been agreed. “Our sole focus is to ensure that the views of the people of Enniscrone are heard and that a plebiscite takes place at the earliest possible opportunity.” said a spokesperson.
