All-Stars go on the road to Galway taking on Titans
SLIGO All-Stars Men’s Team had their season opener in the Division 1 National League away in Galway vs the Titans today Sunday in The Jes.
The team travelled with 11 available players since Aaron Walsh had to step out in the last minute for personal reasons and 3 players who travelled injured.
One of the All-Stars new additions, Zak Balogun, who transferred from LYIT pulled out during the warm up of the game with a knee injury.
The other new players for the team are Ollie Brockman (brother of Tobi Brockman) and both Victory Scholars Zack Yonda and Connor McClenaghan.
There was great expectation in the gym to see the new players in both teams (some youth players travelled with their parents all the way from Sligo) and the energy was very high from both teams and the fans from the beginning of the game.
All-Stars coach Alberto Garcia said: “Our team went off to a good start of the game, getting an early 10 points lead but the opposite team quickly reacted and came back in a good second period to go to the half time with 32-33 on the scoreboard. The second half was similar but our team did a better job managing the pressure from the Titans team that despite not giving up until the last minute had to see how Sligo All-Stars got the win by 66-73. Top scorers for our team was Jesus Sanmartin (17pts), Zack Yonda (14pts) and Oisín O’Reilly (12pts).
“Top scorers for Titans was Tom Rivard (29pts), Eoin Coughlan (14pts) and Ben Kelly (6pts),” Alberto added. They play LYIT on Sunday at 3pm in the Mercy.
