ARGENTINA BOUND

Seán McDermott Boxing Club’s €2018pean silver medallist Déarbhla Rooney is Argentina bound for the Youth Olympics, which take place in Buenos Aires between Saturday, October 6, and Thursday, October 18.

Congratulating Déarbhla, the Connacht Boxing Council of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association said – ‘wow, wow, wow, news just through Ms Déarbhla Rooney from Leitrim has been select to represent Ireland at the up coming Youth Olympics. This is what it’s all about. Congratulations to Déarbhla, her Coaches, club and County.’.

In January, Déarbhla won the Irish under-18 57kg title in Dublin when she defeated the Baldoyle’s Ellie Preston in the final. Since then Déarbhla has won a European silver medal for Ireland in April and competed at the recent World championships in Budapest, where she was unlucky to be loose out in a first round split decision to Thai fighter, Panpatchara Somnuek.

MARTINA’S FANTASY TITLE

When Dublin recently won a history making four all-Ireland titles in a row, Mullies woman Martina Brady was making a little piece of local history at the same time when she claimed a first ever victory in a very hard fought 2018 Manorhamilton Fantasy championship football competition.

Martina was the only contestant in a field of 36 highly rated contenders who in the early days of May this year correctly predicted that Dublin would win the Sam Maguire and also that Galway would win the Connacht title, Donegal the Ulster crown, Dublin the Leinster award and Kerry the Munster accolade.

Glencar/Manorhamilton star player, Ronan Flynn came close to Martina in the Manorhamilton Fantasy competition when he, like Ms Brady, correctly predicted that Galway would win the Connacht title, Donegal the Ulster crown, Dublin the Leinster award and Kerry the Munster accolade.

However Ronan opted for Galway to win this year’s Sam Maguire when he made his Manor Fantasy predictions early last May. The Tribesmen let Ronan down when they fell at the penultimate hurdle when suffering defeat in their all-Ireland semi-final clash with the Dubs on Saturday, August 11, in Croke Park.
