CULTURE NIGHT

Friday, September 21st, is Culture Night 2018 and Sligo is getting in on the nationwide celebratio­n with so much to do. From exhibition­s, performanc­es, workshops, tours, demonstrat­ions, theatre, music and lots more, it’s a night not to be missed. PAUL BYROM

Lauded as one of Ireland’s premier tenors, Paul Byrom is coming to the Coleman Centre in Gurteen on Saturday night. With a career that has seen him travel the world and performing for numerous dignitarie­s, this concert is not to be missed. 8:30pm. Tickets €22:50.

YOUTH THEATRE

Manorhamil­ton Youth Theatre has produced some upcoming acting theatrical talent including Sean Fox ( who’ ll be in the upcoming RTE show Taken Down) and prolific playwright and co-founder of The Rabbit’s Riot Theatre Company Treasa Nealon.

The Junior Youth Theatre is run by the talented actor, facilitato­r and playwright Tori Lee and the Senior Youth Theatre by lecturer and director Declan Drohan.

There will be an open house & registrati­on on Saturday September 15 th in The Glens Centre from 1 to 3pm.

Both Junior Youth Theatre (9 to 13 Years) and Senior Youth Theatre (13 to 18 years) can take part.

THE MODEL CINEMA

The Model Cinema, in partnershi­p with Sligo Film Society, brings audiences the best in internatio­nal and independen­t film.

The winter programme on Thursday evenings is returning later this month and it once again is showing so many world-renowned films.

The first film on the programme is the French C’est La Vie. Directed by the same people behind The Intouchabl­es, it follows the story of Max a veteran wedding planner who is thinking about selling on his business. For now, however, there’s something more pressing to worry about: organising a lavish wedding in a 17 th century chateau. It is showing on September 20 th at 8pm.

With an abundance of films that have featured at Cannes, Toronto and Glasgow festivals to name a few, this programme has so much to offer fans of world cinema.

It runs until December 13th. A season ticket costs €80 or entry to each film is €8.

BAROQUE FESTIVAL

The 2018 Sligo Festival of Baroque Music is running from September 28th to 30 th and will focus on the work that would have been heard in mid-18th cen- tury Dublin and Dresden.

The Sligo Baroque Orchestra takes to the stage on the Saturday at 2pm in the Model, with other performers including The Giordani String Quartet and the Baroque Festival Youth Orchestra who take to the stage on the Sunday at 5:30pm.

Organisers said that this wonderful festival is organised on a very modest budget with all administra­tion by unpaid volunteers. As well as box office they depend on the support of sponsors, patrons and friends. You can buy season tickets or individual tickets to the festival events during the course of the 3-day festival.

COLLETTE SHEERIN

On Saturday, September 22nd, local musician Collette Sheerin launches her new album Watershed Hours in the Hawk’s Well theatre.

This is Collette’s second solo album and is a collection of carefully chosen songs and music that has elements of folk, rock and pop. In this new release she achieves the same beautiful and sensitive balance between vocal and instrument­al. She will be joined by cellist Anna Houston and Shane McGowan on guitar among other very special guests. 8pm. Tickets €15.

CHERISH THE LADIES

On Sunday, September 23rd, the acclaimed Irish/American group Cherish the Ladies are back in the Hawk’s Well with their new album Heart of the Home.

Their level of artistic, historic, and purely enticing entertainm­ent is unlike any in its genre. As their reputation and admiration from both fans and critics alike continues to grow on both sides of the Atlantic, Cherish The Ladies blazes forward into another decade of music making. 8pm. Tickets €20.
