Tried to start fights with members of the public

A 29-year-old man called gardaí pigs and monkeys while trying to start fights with members of the public on O’Connell Street, Sligo District Court heard.

Hamid Naderi, with an address at Mills Falls, Collooney, was charged with public order on O’Connell Street on July 20 th last.

Inspector Donal Sweeney said gardaí received a report that a man was trying to start fights with people and when gardaí arrived they found the defendant threatenin­g members of the public.

He said a chase on foot ensued and the man was verbally abusive to gardaí. He was sub- sequently arrested and brought to Ballymote Garda Station.

Ms Laura Spellman solicitor (defending) said her client was an Iranian national who had been living in Ireland for 9 years and had difficulti­es in the past.

The defendant told Judge Kevin Kilrane he was previously with the military and suffered from PTSD.

The judge said that he would take into account the fact he had no previous conviction­s and had difficulti­es and said he would give him a chance.

The judge remanded the matter to December and said if there was nothing more he would apply the Probation Act.
