ST FARNAN’S

St. Farnan’s/ St. Pat’s won the Under 16 C Championship final when they defeated Coolera/ Strandhill on Tuesday last in Scarden by 4-12 to 1-14.

This was a very competitive game of football with both sides giving of their best to achieve a win. Jim Davis opened the scoring with a point from play for St. Farnan’s/ St. Pat’s. Coolera/ Strandhill dominated the next period of play scoring 1-5 to 0-2. The attack led by Josh Gilligan in midfield posed a lot of difficulties for St. Farnan’s/ St. Pat’s defence. A goal by Thomas Cawley however narrowed the gap and a second from a penalty by Canice Mulligan meant at half time the score was St. Farnan’s/ St. Pat’s 2-4, Coolera/ Strandhill 1-8.

After the break Fionn Connolly levelled matters with a point from play. St. Farnan’s/ St. Pat’s dominated the scoring and with twelve minutes remaining led 3-11 to 1-9. Coolera/ Strandhill never gave up and scored five unanswered points to narrow the gap to a single goal. St. Farnan’s/ St. Pat’s sealed victory with a goal from Jim Davis and the last point of the game from Thomas Cawley. It was a well deserved win but to their credit Coolera/ Strandhill competed very well with great performances from a number of players. The C championship cup was presented to joint Captains Conor Keaveney and Fionn Connolly.

On Friday St. Farnan’s/ St. Pat’s minor team will contest the Minor B championship semi final against Tubbercurry/ Cloonacool in Kilcoyne Park Tubbercurry at 6.15pm. The two sides just met on Friday last in the final round game of the championship which saw Tubbercurry/ Cloonacool come out on top by 2-11 to 0-11. Our minor team will be hoping to reverse this result. Best wishes to Cahán Hallinan for a speedy recovery from an ankle injury which he picked up early in that game. Good wishes also to Jamie Lacken who is injured.

Easkey/ St. Farnan’s under 14 football team is through to the B championship final following a fine win over Drumcliffe/ Rosses Point on Thursday last by 5-12 to 5-4. The team will play Calry/ St. Joseph’s on Sunday next in the final at 11.45 am

Hard luck to Easkey/ St. Farnan’s under 13 Féile team which was defeated by Tourlestrane with the narrowest margin, 6-8 to 6-7 on Sunday in Tourlestrane. On Saturday our Junior team will play Coolera/ Strandhill in the semi final of the Junior B championship at 3pm in Scarden. On Monday next Easkey/ St. Farnan’s under 16 hurlers will play Tourlestrane in the second round of the under16 championship in Easkey at 6.30 pm. Well done to Aoife Mc Dermott, Beach Bar who won €183 in the 50 /50 draw. Next draw on Sunday, September 23.

Next Sunday, the 23rd, sees the Junior team travel to Curry to take on the home side in a play-off to decide who goes forward to meet Shamrock Gaels in the Co Junior Final. Our girls victory over the latter in the final round of games in the group stages ensured there would be a three way tie at the top of the table. The three team names went into the hat with the first out progressing to the final while the remaining two would slog it out to decide who would join them. The match, which in reality is a semi-final is a repeat of the ACL Shield final which the South Sligo side won with four points to spare. Throw-in is at 10am.

The Gaelic for Mothers & Others group have been keeping themselves busy of late in preparation for the National Blitz which takes place in Portmarnock on Sat 6th Oct next.

Castleconnor worked hard under a lot of pressure from the Gaels defence to get two further points but a free from Conor McMorrow sealed the five point victory for the Gaels on a scoreline of 6-3 to 1-13.
