SILVER MEDAL FOR SLIGO

- By SORCHA CROWLEY

There was joy and delight among the Sligo contingent at the Supervalu National Tidy Towns 2018 Awards Ceremony yesterday when a silver medal was bestowed on the county.

It’s another victory on the path to gold after the county won bronze in 2017.

Judges granted Sligo another 12 points, bringing their overall score to 313, up from 301 last year.

“We’re very happy. We’re delighted for the town and for everybody. We’re very thankful to everybody who helped, the volunteers and in particular the businesses,” said Chairman of Sligo Tidy Towns Peter Tiernan.

“The business community have been very supportive. Many of them have painted their premises around the city centre and paid for hanging baskets which added to our score,” he said.

Peter paid tribute to the dozens of volunteers in communities throughout the county who helped clean up over the summer months, as well as state agencies such as Sligo County Council.

“Without their work we wouldn’t have achieved a silver medal today,” he told The Sligo Champion from the Awards Ceremony in the Helix in Glasnevin, north Dublin.

“The Council have done resurfacing works on approach roads - all of that helps our marks, even if we didn’t do it,” he said.

“We’re building on the work of previous committees. The quality of our submission is very good,” he said.

Coolaney won Tidiest Village in Sligo once again. Listowel, County Kerry won the overall prize for Ireland’s Tidiest Town.
