Encouraging lifelong learning of languages at Sligo gathering
European Day of Languages will be celebrated on Wednesday when Sligo Translators Powwow will host an event ‘Celebrating the languages of Sligo’ at the Yeats Building, Hyde Bridge.
The event will celebrate an abundance of favourite poems in translation and in their original language.
Anna Morvern, Convenor of Sligo Translators Powwow and the event, said: “It has been a pleasure to collaborate with so many diverse voices across the county area to put together the programme for this event.
“I am particularly proud that we are welcoming home-grown, celebrated poets, Gerard Beirne, Peggie Gallagher and Mary Branley, alongside new voices representing those who have come to Sligo from a wide range of European countries and from further afield, from Syria and Kurdistan.”
The Europe Direct Centre (EDIC) at Sligo Library has generously funded the event. Ultan McNasser of EDIC, said: “EDIC Sligo is delighted to be involved with celebrating European Day of Languages as its aims are to raise awareness of the importance of language learning in order to increase plurilingualism and intercultural understanding; promote the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe and encourage lifelong language learning in and out of school.”
All are welcome to this free event, with tea, coffee and biscuits to be provided.
