Hundreds march on Dáil to save local Post Offices
CLLR Declan Bree was among those who participated in the Save Our Post Office protest outside Dáil Eireann last week.
Speaking to The Sligo Champion, he said “Rural post offices are an essential part of the community and if the Fine Gael/Independent Alliance Government is any way serious about reversing rural decline then immediate intervention is required to keep our rural post offices open for business.”
“288 rural post offices were closed down between 2005 and 2010 when Fianna Fáil were in power and now a further 300 are threatened with closure.
“The local post office is an essential part of the fabric of any rural community. It is a focal point, a centre of activity and a community hub. We need to get the message through to this government that these closures are unacceptable,” said Cllr Bree.
Hundreds of people from Sligo and areas affected by the threat of post office closures such as Gurteen and Maugherow attended the march to the Dáil on Tuesday 18th September.
Maugherow local Mary Carway also took the opportunity last Friday to hand a letter of protest to Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan.
