The Sligo Champion

Promising start to season for U13s

-

SLIGO R.F.C.’s youngest 15-a-side team are adapting well to the full-scale game and recorded another win again this weekend.

Hamilton Park was looking resplendent in the September sun, as the U13s saw off the visiting Galwegians team on the newly revamped grass pitch.

The first half was a closely-contested affair, with the home side threatening more in the opening 25minutes and came close to scoring towards the end of the half but were held up by a determined Galwegians’ defence.

Sligo tested the visitors with some good pack play by their forwards, making ground to set up some attacking platforms for the backs.

The home side had to work hard at times in defence, as Galwegians looked to put width into their game. The Sligo backs tackled well in the middle of the field to cut off the visitors’ momentum.

The sides remained deadlocked at half-time, but Sligo were soon to put points on the board in the second half, with inside centre Ronan O’Connor scoring twice in quick succession off set pieces in the middle of the field.

Sligo played the conditions well with no. 10 Mark Tempany controlling the game with kicks and plays to keep the visitors pinned in their own half.

With Galwegians now under pressure to run from deep the Sligo boys were determined not to allow them out to finish the game with an impressive 12-0 score line.

Sligo U13s next fixture sees them away to Corinthians, another of Galway’s strongest clubs, in two weeks’ time.
