Award for Tubber for gum initiative
TUBBERCURRY Tidy Towns has been named as the Overall Winner of the Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT) award at the SuperValu National TidyTowns Competition 2018.
Each year, the GLT provides a total of €5,000 in prize money which is distributed amongst the winners of the Village and Small Town and Large Town and Urban Centre subcategories, with a €1,000 bonus going to the overall winner.
The GLT has sponsored a category award in the TidyTowns competition since 2007 as part of an ongoing awareness campaign aimed at highlighting the issue of littered gum amongst the public.
The award serves as an acknowledgement of the consistent efforts of organisations working within their communities to reduce the levels of litter incorrectly disposed of on the streets of their respective localities.
Tubbercurry Tidy Towns stood out to the judges for their creative and innovative approach to tackling the improper disposal of gum amongst young people within their locality.
A child friendly bin dubbed “Mr. Sticky Snail” was installed by the group in a local playground; an innovative and child friendly initiative which sought to encourage children to dispose of their gum in a proper manner.
Awareness of the bin’s presence, and the reasoning behind it, was raised beyond the confines of the playground amongst a wider local audience through promotion of the initiative on Facebook.
