Released on bail and went on to commit offences that night

-

A man released on bail at a sitting of Sligo District Court went on to commit further offences that night.

The court was told last Thursday that Ivan Gethins (27) of Garavogue Villas had been granted bail the previous Thursday but was arrested that night and brought before a court sitting in Carrick-on-Shannon on Friday and was remanded in custody.

Gethins is charged with using threatening and abusive behaviour, being intoxicated and the criminal damage of a garda van at Holborn Street on September 28th.

Matters from the previous week’s court were also re-entered last Thursday where the defendant is facing a raft of charges including trespassing, theft, criminal damage and driving without insurance.

Judge Kilrane told last Thursday’s sitting that the defendant’s behaviour in court the previous Thursday was quite irrational but he was admitted to bail on strict terms and also for the purposes of preparing a detailed probation report and any other report which might be of assistance but he then went on to commit further offences.

“It was very disappointing that he was before me the next day in Carrick,” said the Judge, adding that Gethins could not be trusted in view of his re-offending.

Judge Kilrane said he still wished to proceed with the plan of having the defendant assessed but this would now be done in custody and he remanded Gethins to Harristown Court on October 19 th for a probation report to deal with background and other issues which would be of assistance in sentencing along with a psychiatric assessment. Bail was revoked.
