The Sligo Champion

First win of the season for Sligo RFC

THE Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Cllr Martin Baker hosted a reception in County Hall for the county’s medallists at the national Community Games finals.

In his address the Cathaoirleach said it was a unique occasion. “We have created a record, in that we never had so many champions gathered in this building. Given the huge number of winners County Sligo had at the National Finals, we have a very large crowd here this evening, but I think it was important to honour this special achievement in the seat of Local Government in Sligo.

“For me, the Community Games are one of our most important and successful sporting events. “What makes them special is that the focus is very much on participation and enjoyment rather than success, and this ensures everyone is welcomed along to play their part. But like any sport, there is an element of competition, and this evening we will be celebrating and commending the winners across the various disciplines.

“There is a great goodwill among the people of Sligo towards the Community Games, they were a memorable part of our lives and they will go on to be a wonderful presence in the lives of our children. I especially welcome the fact that our winners are spread all over the county which shows the strength of the Community Games organisation in Sligo. “I think the reason people regard the Community Games as so special is the respect and admiration we have for the many, many volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes. These dedicated people are really the mainstay of the organisation, and we owe them a debt of gratitude for their contribution year in, year out.”

The Cathaoirleach thanked the Secretary of County Sligo Community Games, Ann Kelly, ‘an exceptional volunteer who has devoted a life-time to County Sligo Community Games, and she can take particular pride in the major success we had this year.’ He thanked all the medallists, saying they are a credit to their clubs, coaches, teachers and families.’
