Belfry Senior Football Championship Final Sunday, October 13th, at Enniscrone Tourlestrane V Tubbercurry 4pm

ENNISCRONE/Kilglass GAA Club hosts this weekend’s county Senior final at Quigabar for the first time since 1987, when St Mary’s overcame Tubbercurry by a point, 1-7 to 1-6.

In fact, the marquee day in the Sligo club calendar has taken place in the parish of Kilglass on three occasions previously: in 1916 Enniscrone won their second Senior Championship title following a replay defeat of Doocastle in Enniscrone village, while the 1929 decider took place in Browne’s field in Pullaheeney, when a Kilglass side backboned by the renowned Kavanagh brothers won their first title when they overcame Tubbercurry by 3-3 to 0-3.

There is a very strong tradition of Gaelic Games in the parish of Kilglass.

The Enniscrone/Kilglass club can trace its roots all the way back to 1888 and has remained at the heart of the community ever since.

The club, particularly in recent times, has worked very hard to provide the best possible facilities for its players and members.

Having acquired the ground in the early 1980s, the club officially opened its new pitch at Quigabar in 1983 when Sligo took on the then reigning All-Ireland champions Offaly in a challenge match to mark the occasion.

It was a momentous day for the club and is fondly recalled by those who remember it.

Since, the improvements in the facilities have been vast.

The introduction of new stands, improved dressing room facilities and various other improvements took place in 2004.

Since then, the biggest addition to the grounds at Quigabar has been the erection of an indoor astro-turf facility which was completed last year. This is a unique project that provides first-class facilities for the club’s underage players and provides for year-round training and coaching.

It is also used by various community groups and has become a hive of activity most nights of the week. Enniscrone/Kilglass have been busy preparing for the county final this weekend, and look forward to welcoming all Sligo Gaels to west Sligo.
