The Sligo Champion

Rowers return to the waters

-

SLIGO Rowing Club are now back on the water in training for what promises to be an exciting 2019 racing season. The club has already competed in its first regatta of the 2019 season with Glenn Patterson and Brian Colsh travelling to Cork recently to the National Rowing Centre to compete and race in the senior and junior single sculls respectively at the national time trials. Closer to home, draft plans are already being put in place to host both a local Head of the River event in Spring on Lough Gill and a 800 metre 3 lane sprint regatta in summer on the Garavogue on the Doorly Park straight.

With the introduction of recreational rowing only last year the club has enjoyed increased numbers participating in leisure rowing on the river with the club hosting several Learn to Row programmes in conjunction with the Sligo Sport & Recreation Partnership. The two recreational boats purchased by the club to facilitate this new initiative are of wider beam and deeper draft and therefore inherently more stable and forgiving in the water than the contemporary racing shells. These boats are therefore also an ideal boat for the introduction of junior members to the sport.

Get Going Get Rowing programmes are also taking place in a number of secondary schools over the coming weeks and months which will further bolster the presence and participation of the sport in Sligo.

The club AGM is scheduled to be held in Gillooly Hall on Thursday the 11th October at 8pm.

All welcome.
