Bowed in loving remembrance
Jackie McGowan (82) from Tully, Calry flew to France at the week-end for Armistice Day to visit the grave of his uncle Michael McGowan, a native of Sligo who was killed in action at the Battle of Arras on 27 Sept 1918, aged 33, and who is buried at quarry wood cemetery, near Arras, in Northern France about 130k from Paris. He had emigrated to Canada and later joined the Canadian army. He was attached to the infantry. Jackie was accompanied on the trip to France by his nephew, Enda and visited the grave on Sunday, one hundred years after the ending of The Great War.
