Talk on Drumcliffe monastic settlement

-

A special history talk has been arranged jointly by the Sligo Field Club and Drumcliff Rathcormac Tidy Towns on the Drumcliff Monastic Settlement.

Rev. Stella Durand, a Church of Ireland Minister of Religion, will talk of the foundation of a monastery at Drumcliff by St Colmcille and the rule of life that the monks followed, the importance of Drumcliff in the history of Sligo and indeed of the northwest.

She will speak of the many abbots of the church of Drumcliff, three of whom were saints, several other local saints, the nun, St. Mudhnata and of mysteries associated with possibly two churches.

Stella will also cover the famous “Battle of the Book”, the controversies associated with it and explore reasons for that battle other than the disputed book.

Rev. Stella Durand studied philosophy at Trinity College Dublin and researched the Theology of Religions for her Ph.D. at the National University of Ireland. Stella Durand served for many years as Rector of the Kiltegan Group of parishes in the Diocese of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory where she was regarded with great esteem.

This local history talk will take place at Drumcliff Church, 8pm on Tuesday, 20 th November. All are welcome €5 admission.
