10 Real Gone Kid Deacon Blue Power ballad ‘First Time’ was originally written for a Coca-Cola ad in 1987. It gave New York singer Robin Beck her one and only UK chart hit the following year, spending 14 weeks in the charts - three of them at number one. It was also a No 1 hit in Ireland and a number of other European countries. Beck’s chart breakthrough came after some years as a backing singer with the likes of Cher, Chaka Khan and Leo Sayer, but she was also a seasoned solo recording artist, having released her first album in 1979. In the UK, Beck failed to capitalise on the success of ‘First Time’: next single ‘Save Up All Your Tears’ peaked at number 84 in the charts and subsequent releases have not made an appearance in the top 100.
