‘A jewel in Sligo’s crown’

The Sligo Champion - - NEWS -

The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar received a warm reception from the public when he arrived in Strandhill on Friday afternoon last to perform the sod turning ceremony at the site of the proposed new National Surf Centre.

The Taoiseach was formally welcomed to Strandhill by Cllr Declan Bree, the Chairman of the board of the Strandhill Maritime Centre, who introduced him to fellow board members and invited guests.

Among those present at the event were members of the Oireachtas and County Council, members of the Strandhill Community Development Association, the County Sligo Surf Club, representatives of Failte Ireland, the Chamber of Commerce, the Sligo Tourist Development Association and the Institute of Technology.

We were very pleased that the Taoiseach took time from his schedule to perform the sod-turning, Cllr Bree told ‘ The Sligo Champion.’

“The announcement of grant aid from Failte Ireland and the Rural Regeneration Fund will allow for the project to proceed as planned and will provide for the construction of a state of the art new National Surf Centre here in Strandhill.”

“The overwhelming support for the project which we received from all sectors of the Strandhill community was extremely helpful.”

“I also wish to acknowledge the commitment of the members of the board of the Maritime Centre who have on a voluntary basis given of their time and energy to ensure the success of this project. I would particularly single out the Secretary of the board, Mick McEnroe, for his exceptional contribution to the development of the Centre.”

Strandhill is one of the jewel’s in Sligo’s crown and it is now recognised as one of the most prominent surfing destinations in Europe. In this context the public investment in this project is not only appropriate but richly deserved.” said Cllr Bree.
