Planning issues in rural Ireland unresolved
FIANNA Fáil TD for Sligo-Leitrim Marc Mac Sharry has blasted the government for blocking legislation which aims to address planning permission issues in Leitrim, Sligo, Donegal and Roscommon.
Changes to planning laws some years back, following an EPA ruling on water pollution, have effectively imposed a ban on rural planning in all of County Leitrim and many other areas in the North West, it is being claimed.
“In recent years countless people have been blocked from realising their dream - and their right - to be able to build a home in their local area because of the interpretation of the rules.
“The absence of basic common sense and flexibility has prevented the use of technological solutions capable of dealing with appropriate effluent treatment where percolation is challenging due to soil type. This Bill, which I support, aims to right that wrong. True to form, however, the government’s contempt for the people of our region is borne out with its mindless opposition to this legislation, which provides workable solutions for rural dwellers.
“A proposed revised Code of Practice by the EPA is put on the never, never.”
