Was just after buying car from his mother when stopped by gardaí

A 28-year-old man was only after buying a car from his mother when he was caught driving without tax and NCT, Sligo District Court heard.

Anthony Rooney, with an address at Oakfield Park pleaded guilty to not having tax or NCT at Lake Isle Road on May 8th 2018. Rooney explained to Judge Kevin Kilrane that he was only after buying the car from his mother.

He said he only had the car a few weeks at the time, roughly five or six weeks. It was now at a yard in Ballisodar­e. He had no previous conviction­s.

Judge Kilrane said that he was going to strike out the NCT charge as it carried penalty points and he then fined him €100 for not having tax.

Mr John Anderson (solicitor) who appeared for Rooney said they were most grateful.

Also at Sligo District Court on Thursday, a 65-yearold man pleaded guilty to not having insurance.

Mr John Anderson (solicitor) defending said his client, Michael Walsh, with an address at Cloonymeen­ahan, Riverstown was a farmer who was helping with a cow calving when he took the foolish decision to drive a van belonging to his nephew. Judge Kilrane said that as he didn’t have a licence he was obliged to disqualify him for 2 years and he was fined €100 for no insurance.
