Rowers impress at indoor competition

-

SLIGO Rowing Club travelled to Limerick last weekend to compete at the Irish Provinces Indoor Rowing Championships which was hosted at the Sports Arena on the University of Limerick campus.

This was the first competitive event of the 2019 and saw rowing athletes complete time trials over distances ranging from 500 to 2000metres on indoor rowing ergometers against athletes of their age group from all around Ireland.

The event is an ideal way to gauge how members are progressing when compared to their peers and the performances of the young Sligo athletes didn’t disappoint.

13 athletes from Sligo Rowing Club participated in the championships in various categories ranging from Junior 13 right up to Masters with 7 of the 13 making their racing debuts for the club.

Ava & David Murray, Jeanette & Isabella Michalopoulou, Rosie Spoorenberg, Nadine O’Malley and Ella Clarke all competed for their first time over 500 metres putting in some very strong times considering they just joined the sport only a few short weeks ago.

Angus Carter, Killian McCarthy, Alannah Donohoe and Siofra Kelleher all demonstrated improved performances over the last year putting in some very strong times as did Molua Donohoe in the Masters category.

Brian Colsh put in the performance of the day coming 3rd out of a field of 26 in the men’s Junior 16 2000 metre category with an excellent time of 6:46:0 with R. Ager of Lee taking first and A. Carroll of Athlone coming second.

The club now looks forward to attending Carrick on Shannon 5Km Head of the River scheduled for this weekend weather depending.
