THERE were celebrations in Sligo when members of the Ireland Wado Kai Karate team returned from the 46th European Wado Kai Karate Championships in Portugal where they exceeded all expectations.

It was the first time members of Sligo Martial Arts Academy have represented Ireland and they proudly returned to Sligo with three bronze and three silver medals in their respective events.

The team included Ciara Lindsay, Brooke Byre, Adam McDonagh, Sonny Walsh, Ellen Woodward, Fraser Woodward and Anna Woodward.

Mickey Downes, head coach at Sligo Martial Arts Academy said: “I’m incredibly proud of all of our competitors.

“Their success is in no small part due to the dedication and the effort they put into training.

“Most of them have been with the club since they were 7 and to see their progression to get to this moment is just wonderful.

“The experience they have gained will be fantastic, not just for themselves, but for the rest of the academy as well.

“It will be inspirational for other members who will see what is possible if they put their minds to it.

“Hopefully this will be the first of many international representations for Sligo Martial Arts Academy,” he added.
