Astro action heats up

-

THE Sligo Rovers Astro league continued last week, with the race for top spot heating up ahead of the Christmas break in a few weeks’ time. Just four points separate the top four as it stands, with plenty of thrills and spills promised ahead. Third placed Cornview Celtic enjoyed an emphatic and dominant display against new boys Abbvie, registering an 8-0 thumping victory. Cornview now just sit one point off top spot with a game in hand, while for Abbvie it has proven to be a difficult start for them in the league who sit in 14th spot, collecting just one point after their opening eight games.

Clune Celtic have continued their rich vein of form after seeing off the challenge of the Bald Eagles 3-0. The ever prolific Kevin Butler scored two of his side’s goals while Diarmuid Mclinery scored the third. As a result, Clune now sit second in the league standings, albeit having played a game more than their rivals. The game of the week provided a five goal thriller, as GSS secured a 3-2 victory over the high flying Calry on Wednesday last. The result moves GSS up to seventh position, with them keen to continue their recent momentum in order to obtain a top half finish before the Christmas break. As for Calry, they remain in fourth position and sit just two points off top stop which is a remarkable turnaround in form from 2017. Brendan O’ Connor scored twice for GSS while Dermot O’Connor got the third. Ronan O’ Hara and Neil McCabe were the goal scorers for Calry.
