FOREST WALK FUNDRAISER
Locals continue to enjoy the Forest Walk and its extension which runs through the forestry behind Rathscanlon Creamery. Stretching from Rathscanlon Creamery, it runs through the forestry of Oak, Ash and Sitka Spruce and continues through Rathscanlon and Rhue bogs at the rear of the woodlands. It has optional loops which bring you back to Rathscanlon Creamery or it also extends through the bogs at Rathscanlon and Rhue to bring you out onto the Rhue road near Rhue graveyard. Therefore residents on the Rhue side can enter from that side.
The original section of the walk was developed about five years ago and the only complaint from users was that it was too short. Now the extension adds many options and choice of distance with more features to see.
Developed by Tubbercurry Chamber of Commerce and Community Association, a local contribution needs to be raised and for this purpose a raffle is being held and tickets are for sale at present. Priced at €20 or book of three for €50, the walk development committee ask people from throughout South Sligo to be as generous as possible to help pay for and maintain this very worthwhile local amenity that can be enjoyed free of charge by everybody.
Tickets are available from Geraldine Brennan, Dermot Gannon, Gearoid Surlis, John Gillespie, Roger McCarrick, Reggie McNulty, Paul Richardson and Mat- tie Brennan (Rhue). Draw takes place early December.

GREENWAY MEETING
A very well attended meeting took place recently at An Chroi, Tubbercurry in relation to the proposal for the development of a Greenway on the footprint of the old Sligo-Limerick Rail line, specifically between Charlestown to Collooney. A presentation was made by consultants RPS on their findings, and it looks as if a proposal for a Greenway will be submitted by Sligo County Council to Government for funding in the near future.
A healthy debate took place about the re-opening of the line for trains, and as it is not in Government Draft Strategies up to 2040 and possibly beyond, the consensus was that the Greenway proposal would be pursued. If it was ever deemed practical in the future by Government to reopen the line, it is within the terms of the proposal that a new Greenway Route would be developed running parallel to a new train track.
This is an exciting time for infra structural and recreational development in South Sligo, an area that needs development so badly. Watch for updates on the Greenway from the Greenway Co-op committee.
