Department commit to funding for 62 social houses in Maugheraboy area

The Department of Housing and Local Government have committed to funding the development of 62 social houses in the Maugheraboy area.

The development will now proceed to Stage 2 and will have an expected start date of con- struction in early 2020.

Councillor Chris MacManus said: “at a time when over a thousand families are seeking social housing, many from the Maugheraboy and West Ward area, the securing of the funding to build sixty-two houses is welcome.”

Councillor MacManus added: ‘ Too many families are priced out of the private rental sector or unable to save for a deposit to buy their own homes because of massive rent increases locally of 30-40% over the last few years.”

MacManus said more developments like this are needed across the region.

“What we need to see are more developments across the region like this Maugheraboy project for more social and affordable housing - public housing built on public lands with public finances.”
