Footbridge
Independent Councillor Declan Bree has questioned when funding for the proposed footbridge adjacent to Markievicz Bridge will be committed to.
“The necessit y for the provision of a pedestrian footbridge adjacent to the Markievicz Bridge, linking Bridge Street and Thomas Street, has been discussed at numerous meetings over the years. Residents of the East side of the town particularly l obbied for the provision of such a footbridge,” he told the meeting.
“Back in 2009 the Borough Council advanced the project to the stage where planning permission was granted for the project which involves the construction of a modern slender suspension bridge adjacent to the main bridge.
“Following the grant of planning permission Sligo County Council was designated as the authorit y responsible for progressing development of the proposed footbridge.
“The estimated cost of the footbridge is approximately €1 million. However no Government funding was provided for the project,” said Cllr Bree.
