SKERRIES RFC SLIGO RFC 19 27

eventually got some points on the board by driving over the line on the half hour mark, reducing the margin to 10points at the half-way mark.

The home side come out all guns blazing and scored in the first 5minutes, followed 10minutes later by a second try to leave Sligo trailing by 2 points.

Skerries boasted an excellent back line, constantly looking for gaps in the Sligo defence, but it was the visitors who again broke through to regain the lead when adept handling by the backs released Calum Goddard on the wing to touch down for his second try of the game.

Keegan was unlucky with his conversion narrowly missing from the right touch line.

With less than ten minutes left on the clock, the game was still in the melting pot and the home side were only 3points adrift.

Some inspirational play in the line-out by Sligo’s Shane Boyle enabled the visitors to work their way into stronger field position, pinning down the opposition in their own 22.

Then Ryan Feehily broke left, spotting a gap at the side of a ruck close to the touch line and nipped in for Sligo’s bonus point try, bringing the score to 19-27.

Keegan was unlucky with the conversion as the ball fell off the tee as he started his run and the attempted drop kick fell short.

Skerries piled on the pressure from the restart, determined to narrow the gap and earn another valuable bonus point on but Sligo kept their heads, working the ball downfield, with Jason East making his presence felt.

The final whistle was greeted with elation from the large travelling crowd as Sligo moved up to 7th in the league.

All in all, it was a very tough game with Skerries competitive at the breakdown and the Sligo defence tested throughout, but the visitors worked hard and showed great determination to get back to their winning ways.

Next Saturday, 8th December sees the local derby against Corinthians, who lost to MU Barnhall last weekend.
