- By PAUL DEERING

A man went to check on his van late on Sunday night after seeing something suspicious outside his home only to be confronted by a man brandishing a handgun.

The hooded gunman pointed the gun at the householder’s head before running off and then stopping to fire two shots into the air.

The dramatic incident unfolded in the small Cloonshanbally housing estate in Culfadda around 11.30pm.

Gardaí received a call and were quickly on the scene but the culprit had escaped, apparently on foot. House to house enquiries are ongoing in the area and the investigation is being conducted by Gardaí in Ballymote. The householder, a native of Sligo town aged in his 30’s, has yet to make a statement of complaint. He has been living in the area for some time.
