Sizes and heights of cemetery gravestones to be reviewed
THE height of gravestones in Sligo cemeteries is being looked at.
The Council has been urged to review and update its Graveyard and Cemetery regulations as soon as practicable and publish it to the public and online.
It’s due to a motion from Cllr Keith Henry who told the meeting a number of people had contacted him regarding structures put into graveyards as head stones.
“There are some people who take the bye-laws in a very flexible manner,” said Cllr Henry.
He raised the issue of a height restriction and an issue of some grave stones encroaching on other graves.
“This happened in Ballymote recently and there was debris left. The Council cleaned it up but it’s a very sensitive issue,” he said.
Cllr Henry was supported by Cllr Rosaleen O’Grady.
Director of Services with the Council Tom Kilfeather told members that subject to resources the Council would carry out a review next year and publish their policy on the Council website afterwards.
