Dunes to be let erode

THE sand dunes along the northern shore of Strandhill from the caravan park to the sewage treatment plant are to be let retreat without any coastal protection works by the Council or the OPW.

Cllr Chris MacManus was told that any ‘ hard’ defences would ‘starve’ the beach of sand, making it less attractive for tourists and surfers. Cllr MacManus reiterated the concern among the local community at the fast rate of coastal erosion. Cllr Hubert Keaney was told that coastal erosion would be accounted for in the design of the new surf centre.
