Runner-up spot for Adela at national poetry competition

-

Ursuline College TY student, Adela Zinschitz took part in the finals of Poetry Aloud 2018 in Dublin last week where she came runner up in the intermediate category.

Poetry Aloud is an annual poetry speaking competition, organised by Poetry Ireland and the National Library of Ireland. This year the final was held in the National Library reading room,.

The judging panel included special guest, Seamus Heaney’s daughter, Catherine Ann Heaney.

Since she got the good news that she was through to the finals, Adela has received support from Ms Morris, her English teacher in the Ursuline, in practicing her two poems, ‘Boglands’ by Seamus Heaney’ and ‘I Am Stretched On Your Grave’ - Anonymous. Adela commented afterwards - “It was a lovely way to come together and share and hear poetry, and even if I’m not Irish I was proud to be in the National Library and fill the room with the stories of people from a long time ago.” The final saw 29 students from across the country compete in the junior, intermediate and senior categories for the Seamus Heaney Poetry Aloud Award. Fellow Ursuline students, Eimear Kearins and Fatma Dogan took part in the semi-finals.
