Engineer had €50 worth of cocaine

A 23-year-old man pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine at Sligo District Court on Thursday and was subsequent­ly order to pay €200 to charity.

Edward Maloney, with an address at Apartment 5, Riverwalk, Waterford was charged with possession of the drug at Hazelwood Road, Sligo on February 20 th 2018. Defending solicitor Mr Gerry McGovern said that his client was entering a plea.

The value of the drug was €50 and the defendant had no previous conviction­s, the court heard.

Mr McGovern said that his client had just qualified as an engineer and was heading to the States for work. The judge said that he was going to order Maloney to pay €200 to charity and that he would then strike out the matter.

The charity selected was the St John’s Children’s Ward in Crumlin. Mr McGovern said his client had learned a valuable lesson.
