No more fines for overdue books

-

Since January 21st, Sligo library members do not have to pay fines for overdue, undamaged items and no existing fines will be collected.

Sligo Library will further realise its mission statement in providing a responsive, accessible and inclusive library service for all.

The removal of fines for library members is one of the actions included in the national strategy, “Our Public Libraries 2022 – Inspiring, Connecting and Empowering Communities”.

This strategy, launched in June 2018, identified the importance of maximising access for all to the public library service, the library is a free lifelong resource that should be available to all without barriers or charges.

No fines does not mean no responsibility. Members will continue to receive reminders and overdue emails to prompt them to return items to the library and are asked to please return items on or before their due date to allow them to be borrowed by other library users.

Fees for lost or damaged adult items will be charged and these will be shown as a balance on a library account.

There will be no replacement charge for children’s items which have been lost or damaged.

Sligo Library now invites and encourages members of the public to return your undamaged, overdue items to any of their branches. This is also your chance to find out all that they have to offer, including:

* FREE Membership

* FREE Access to online services such as eBooks, eMagazines and eCourses

* FREE access to over 300 library catalogues around Ireland

* Easy Access to renewals and holds with your own personal log-in

* Local Studies and family research access

* Access your library service from anywhere in the world at www.sligolibrary.ie

Sligo Library had one of its busiest years so far in 2018 with over 148,000 books issued, our hugely successful Summer Star Reading Challenge, the renowned monthly literary event, The Word plus lot’s of exciting activities, talks and events.

The removal of overdue fines is another way for libraries to encourage people who might not regularly use the library to experience all that we have to offer.
