Mercy NS athletes do well in Athlone

-

A total of 17 pupils from Our Lady of Mercy NS made the trip to Athlone last month and really stamped their authority from early on at the Diversity Games in AIT.

There were 4 categories 3/4th class girls, 3/4th class boys, 5/6th class girls and 5/6th class boys.

From the get go the Mercy kids were making finals. Riona Luse won the 3/4th class girls A final, Oskar Packowski was 3rd in his 60m A final and the other A finalist Kathrina Wilczynska finished a tight 5th in hers and also gained some points for senior girls.

Onto the long jump and our Lady of Mercy had 3 of the 4 winners with Nabeela Basith winning senior girls, Ashton Conlon winning junior boys in his final jump. Riona Luse won the junior girls with the biggest jump of the day across all 4 age categories and James Donoghue in senior boys doing himself and his school proud taking 3rd and getting points up on the board.

Onto the 150s and it saw a fine placing for Jerome Ramaabya, he claimed 3rd place and chalking up more points while Emily Hession was emphatic winning her A final by a wide margin and keeping the junior girls on top overall.

In the 300m there was brilliant runs by all, Linda Klavina in senior girls claiming 3rd place, Francis Donoghue claimed a brilliant second place in his A final and the run of the day and performance of the day came from Sophia Murrin in the junior girls 300m.

With a wall of runners in front of her after 50m she had very little room but she meandered her way to the front with a lap to go, stretching out down the back straight she built up a huge lead to hold it all the way to the line for the win and maximum points for the junior girls.

Onto the relays and there were top 3 finishes by all 4 relay teams.

Once more the junior girls were on top in their category, taking the win by some 30m to cap off a clean sweep in all 5 disciplines and to win the overall competition.

The team included Riona Luse, Emma Carty, Emily Hession and Sophia Murrin.

Well done to all who took part on this most enjoyable day.
