Hawk’s Well to celebrate the music of Sligo’s adopted son

-

An American born singer-song writer with an inextricable link to Sligo is to be celebrated with a concert at Hawk’s Well Theatre in February. With Sligo woven into in his work, his songs and his heart, the Thom More Songbook will see some of the county’s top musicians gather to pay tribute to the inspirational musician for what is sure to be a special night.

Many of Thom’s songs have become folk anthems over the years, and Friday 1st February sees the Hawk’s Well celebrate this wonderful legacy. Coming together for this very unique happening, a host of musicians and friends of Thom including Seamie O’Dowd, Cathy Jordan, Rick Epping, Eleanor Shanley, Mairtin O’Connor, Mary Mc Partlan, Midnight Well bandmate Gerry O’Beirne, Gino Lupari, Gerry and Aoife Grennan and many more will gather to perform some of his best known work.

Moving to Ireland in 1971, Thom Moore had a deep-rooted relationship with Sligo, and spent much of the last three decades here, in a county dear to his heart.

Settling near the town together with his wife Kathy, he formed the folk rock band Pumpkinhead with fellow Americans Sandi and Rick Epping, in the early Seventies.

Pumpkinhead split up in 1976 and Moore formed Midnight Well with Janie Cribbs, Gerry O’Beirne and Mairtín O’Connor. Moore earned considerable praise for his song writing on numbers like ‘Still Believing’, ‘Saw You Running’ and ‘Jessie’s Friend’.

Moore has been cited by a number of Ireland’s most recognisable performers including Maura O’Connell, Charlie McGettigan and Mary Black, who described him as; “A truly gifted songwriter with a beautiful golden voice”. Black spoke of her gratitude to Moore for offering her his song ‘Carolina Rua’, describing his death as; “Another great loss to Irish music and musicians”.

The show kicks off at 8pm, and tickets, priced at €25/12.50 u18s (plus €1 renovation fee) are available now. For enquiries, or to book visit www.hawkswell.com or call 0719161518.
