Save Gurteen Post Office group ‘frustrated’

-

ON Thursday evening the Save Gurteen Post Office committee said they were shocked and angered to be informed that An Post would indeed go ahead and close their Post Office on February 28th.

Having received two reprieves, one of 3 months and one of one month, the committee were optimistic that their case would be treated favourably.

They said that they used this time to strengthen their argument that the office was viable and should remain open.

They explained they worked with the community to increase business by encouraging people to open savings accounts, transfer their social welfare payments and use the Post Office as much as possible.

“We conducted a very detailed and scientific survey to confirm that the population within the confines of Gurteen was indeed 512 not less than 400 as stated by An Post.

“All politicians were contacted on several occasions to work on their behalf and appeal to have the decision reviewed. All of this effort seems to have been in vain however.

“It is most frustrating to have worked so hard to build up business for An Post as was recommended by their officials who told the committee to ‘ keep doing what you’re doing’ but at no stage would An Post engage with the committee to debate the facts or give any feedback from the review.

“The campaign was always conducted with dignity and determination and a massive amount of work was undertaken,” one of the committee members said.

Next Sunday at 6pm there will be a public meeting in Gurteen Hall to discuss the An Post announcement and to address how the village can work to safeguard its future. A very large turnout is expected.
