‘Jail beckons’ if thefts persist - Judge

-

A 42-year-old man has been told by a District Court judge that if he continues to steal he will face prison.

William Kelly of 5, McNeill Drive, Cranmore appeared before Sligo District Court charged with larceny.

The court heard Kelly stole a box of Bulmers worth €20 and two bottles of white wine worth €12 in total from Tesco on O’Connell Street on January 2nd last.

Defending solicitor Gerry McGovern told the court that Kelly had 44 previous convictions, including criminal damage offences and was recovering from alcohol addiction.

“Generally he is doing well, he has been dry, the alcohol was taken off him,” Mr McGovern informed the court.

Judge Kevin Kilrane told Kelly that it was ‘petty larceny’ such as this charge that causes him ‘a lot of trouble’ and that if he continues to commit these offences ‘jail beckons’. The judge convicted Kelly imposing a €200 fine.
