Support for footbridge
THE Council has agreed to write to Transport Infrastructure Ireland to make the case for providing a footbridge over the N4 at Collooney to connect the commercial zones with the village.
It’s on foot of a motion by Sinn Féin Cllr Thomas Healy who paid tribute to the people of Collooney for attending a public meeting on the matter on Friday, February 1st.
Over 70 people attended that meeting from Owenmore Gaels G.A.A club, Tidy Towns, Collooney Development Committee, the Handball Alley, the Parents’ Association and the Active Retirement Group and young families.
“This has been an ongoing issue since then Councillor Sean MacManus raised it as far back as 2007 and since then the crossing has seen increased speed and volume of traffic as well as an increased pedestrian footfall. People here were horrified by the potential tragedy of the accident with the lorry here recently and want to ensure a safe crossing for all young and old,” Cllr Healy told the Council meeting.
His motion received unanimous support. “The imminent work to upgrade the Collooney to Castlebaldwin section of the N4 is very welcome,” said Cllr Healy, “but it will result in increased hazards for pedestrians. This needs to be recognised nationally as a vital piece of that infrastructure now while the work is commencing.
“Following the support of Sligo County Council for my motion today we will lobby relevant bodies and will hold a rally to highlight the community’s concerns,” he added.
