The Sligo Champion

Am’s achievement

-

mance like that all year. Granted that is the best team we’ve played all year but we just didn’t perform.

“We were in the Connacht final and we were 11 or 12 points up at half time and Clonbur came back so we mentioned that in the dressing room and we said we would just go out and try and compose our game a little bit in the second half but we just weren’t able today.”

On the incredible year overall for the Sea Blues, Sloyan admitted it might take a few days for it all to really sink in. First, they will spend a few days dealing with their disappointment, but when they move on they will be able to appreciate the scale of what they have achieve.

“I suppose when the dust settles maybe in the next few days, look we are bitterly disappointed at the minute but overall I mean it is great to get to an All-Ireland final, it is a fantastic achievement for the club, for the county and look it you have to be proud, you have to be proud of the support we have got, proud of the players and the commitment they have given all year and look it is just one of these things.

“Our preparation was good, everything was good coming into this game but it’s just unfortunate really,” Sloyan said.

He said being such a youthful side will really be something to build on.

“I just spoke to the players there and I said look it is desperate to come up and lose the way we did but at the same time we have to learn from these things and hopefully we will get an experience of playing in Croke Park and playing on big occasions and even build-ups.

“None of these guys were ever involved in build-ups, the whole parish seemed to go mad and maybe all these little things got to guys a small bit but look it is a learning curve.

“I mean you look at the quality that Beaufort bring there and they are big, strong, physical, really good players and Ciarán Carey there at number 11 was outstanding and we tried a number of different guys on him but the pace he has is unbelievable.

“We have a few pacy guys and they were just at the pin of their collar trying to stay with them so that shows how they good they were,” Sloyan added.
