Top awards for local boxers

THREE north west boxers received top awards at the annual I.A.B.A awards in the Louis Fitzgerald hotel in Dublin.

Sligo boxer Paddy Myers, aged 16, who boxes out of Sligo city boxing club received an award for his silver medal he won in Russia last month at the Junior European Championsh­ips.

Myers is a 5 time Irish champion and has boxed in two European championsh­ips.

Sligo youth Olympian Dean Clancy, 17, who boxes out of Sean McDermott Boxing Club received his award for his silver medal he won in Italy in the Youth European Championsh­ips.

Clancy has six Irish titles and 2 European medals and boxed in the world championsh­ips and youth Olympic Games last year,

Leitrim Olympian Derbhla Rooney received her award for her silver medal in Italy in the European Championsh­ips plus her bronze medal in the Youth Olympic Games.

All 3 boxers have a bright future ahead. Clancy and Myers will be defending their titles later in the year and hopefully qualify for the European championsh­ips again where Rooney will be stepping up a level into the senior ranks.
